Dr. Gary Preston is in his fourth year as an Associate Professor of Physical Education/Exercise Science in the Health and Physical Education Department and second year as the Strength and Conditioning Coach for NGCSU in 2009-10. He has been working with the men’s basketball team since April 2006 and is a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) by the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA).
Preston worked as a weightlifting/strength and conditioning coach in Saudi Arabia for two years, taught high school in Alabama for one year and worked as an exercise physiologist/fitness specialist at Mississippi Baptist Medical Center. He later taught health and physical education, strength training & conditioning and personal training at Gainesville College in Gainesville, GA for 14 years. He coached an Olympic-style weightlifting team at GC and took three lifters to the National Collegiate Weightlifting Championships and hosted the 1996 National Collegiate Weightlifting Championships at GC. He is a member of the 1985 first place, and 1986 second place National Collegiate Weightlifting Championship Teams at Auburn University. He placed second in the National Masters Weightlifting Championships in age-group and weight class in 1996.
Preston was born and raised in Birmingham, Alabama. He attended Jefferson State Junior College in Birmingham, AL, and completed B.S. and M.Ed. degrees in Physical Education at Auburn University. He completed the Doctor of Arts degree in Physical Education/minor in Health from Middle Tennessee State University in 2004. Preston and his wife, Julie, reside in Gainesville with their daughter Carly and son Seth.
