DAHLONEGA, GA - The 8th-ranked North Georgia baseball team rallied with another walk-off win on Saturday afternoon with a 4-3 victory over Millersville University at Bob Stein Stadium in non-conference action.
Daniel Warzon delivered the clutch two-out single to score Kenny Bellavance for the victory in the bottom of the ninth, evening the series at a game apiece and sending North Georgia to 7-1 on the season. The loss drops the Marauders to 1-1 on the year.
The story of the day was senior Blake Hobby's seven innings of shutout ball and a 3-0 lead that the Saints took into the ninth inning. Hobby surrendered only two hits over the stretch, including pitching out of third-inning trouble. Millersville had runners on first and second with no outs after a base-on-balls and a hit. The Murauders attempted to sacrifice runners over, but Hobby and great defense by Jordan Erisman allowed the Saints to escape the trouble.
The Saints answered Millersville's threat with one of their own in the bottom half of the frame. A leadoff double by Dustin Carpenter followed up by a Troy Snitker hit, placed runners on the corners. Carpenter scored one batter later on a fielders' choice off the bat of Warzon.
North Georgia extended their lead to 3-0 with two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning as Warzon led off the inning with a hit-by-pitch and scored on an Erisman double to the left field corner. Erisman advanced to third on a Derek Hooper sacrifice and scored on a Terrell Jones sacrifice fly.
The game remained 3-0 into the ninth until Millersville rallied to tie the game. Senior reliever Jacob Rickett retired the first two batters in the ninth, but then loaded the bases after hitting a batter, surrendering a walk, and allowing a hit. Mike August then ripped a double into the leftfield corner, clearing the bases and knotting the score at 3-3 heading to the last of the ninth inning.
The Saints answered in the bottom of the inning as Bellavance led off the inning with a double. Bellavance would advance to third on a fielders' choice, and with two outs in the inning, Millersville intentionally walked Troy Snitker to set up the walk-off single by Warzon.
Rickett (1-0) earned the win for the Saints, while Warzon finished the day 1-for-3 with 2 runs batted in and a run scored. Snitker finished with a 2-for-3 day at the plate, while Erisman went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored.
North Georgia and Millersville will play the rubber game of the series on Sunday afternoon at Bob Stein Stadium. First pitch is set for 12-noon as the Saints look to take their third straight series to open the season.
