Baseball Defeats Armstrong Atlantic 9-5, Claim Third Straight Win

DAHLONEGA, Ga. – The University of North Georgia (UNG) baseball team continued to build momentum Friday evening as the Saints took down Armstrong Atlantic State University 9-5 in the first game of a Peach Belt Conference three-game series at Bob Stein Stadium.

Prior to the game, head coach Tom Cantrell was presented with a commemorative jersey marking his 500th win at North Georgia. Cantrell collected win #500 with the Saints, the 677th of his collegiate coaching career, with an 11-9 victory over King College on February 9 of this year.

In the game, the Saints were able to control the offensive side of things nearly all the way through as the two squads combined for 27 hits and 14 runs.

The scoring started in the bottom of the second when right fielder Andrew Gordon scored off a single by Brad Barto. The Saints then extended the lead in the bottom of the next inning when Kenny Bellavance knocked Eason Spivey in with a single through the right side.

Both Bellavance and Spivey ended the game with three runs batted in. Spivey added two runs scored with a 3-4 performance at the plate while Tremayne Toorie, Travis Naraine and Bellavance joined him in collecting multiple hits in the contest.

The Pirates did make several attempts to cut the lead, including pulling to within one at 6-5 in the eighth when Cody Sherlin and Chris Fritts both scored for the Pirates.

However, the Saints' bats could not be silenced as Derek Hooper, Toorie and Spivey all scored in the bottom of the frame to help secure the victory.

Clint Spratlin (2-3) pitched six innings on the mound, striking out seven batters, to claim the win with red shirt freshman Brandon Agar coming in for the final three innings to earn his third save of the season with four strikeouts.

Mitchell Dolan (2-1) accepted his first loss of the season for the Saints as he gave up 12 hits and six runs in five and two-thirds innings of work.

North Georgia and Armstrong will renew their rivalry tomorrow, Saturday, Apr. 13 with a PBC doubleheader. First pitch of game-one is slated for 2:00 p.m. with the second game to follow at around 5:30 p.m.
