Bellavance and Hooper Receive PBC All-Academic Honors

AUGUSTA, Ga. – The University of North Georgia baseball team put Kenny Bellavance and Derek Hooper on the Peach Belt Conference All-Academic Team as announced by the conference office on Monday.

A senior from Stone Mountain, Ga., Bellavance boasts a 3.97 grade point average as a Business Finance major and is a four-year starter for head coach Tom Cantrell’s program. Two weeks ago, he was named North Georgia’s 2013 Male Scholar Athlete as well as the Senior Athlete of the Year and he was named to the CoSIDA Capital One Academic All-District 3 Team last week.

Now a three-time PBC All-Academic Team selection and two-time PBC Gold Level Scholar Athlete, he boasts a .326 career batting average in 176 starts off 234 hits that includes 25 doubles, five triples, two home runs, 117 runs batted in and 117 runs scored. His 19 career sacrifice hits has him tied for fifth all-time in school history. In 2010, he was named to the Daktronics All-Region team and backed that up by earning All-Region honors from both Daktronics and the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) in 2011. He is also a two-time All-PBC selection and was named to the PBC's Preseason All-Conference Team prior to the 2012 season.

A senior from Sharpsburg, Ga., Hooper has a 3.69 GPA as a Business Management major and is a three-year starter for Cantrell and the Saints. Now a two-time PBC All-Academic Team selection and one-time PBC Silver Level Scholar Athlete, he has played in all but three games that he has put on the Saints jersey. He boasts a career batting average of .307 and has scored 111 total runs. He has homered three times in his career, including his first homer at Bob Stein Stadium earlier this season. He has driven in 72 runs while stealing 32 bases on 41 attempts. In 2011, Hooper was named to the Daktronics Southeast All-Region Second Team in his first year as a Saint.

The team is part of a season-long program recognizing the outstanding accomplishments of PBC student-athletes in the classroom as well as on the field.

To be eligible for the All-Academic team, a student-athlete must 1) participate in at least half of his/her team's events and be either a starter or significant contributor; 2) achieved a 3.30 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) and 3) completed at least one full academic year at his or her current institution.
