SAVANNAH, GA – The North Georgia men's golf team fired a final round 307 on Tuesday afternoon to finish in 10th place in the field of 11 teams at the 2011 Armstrong Pirate Invitational at Savannah Quarters Country Club.
A two-team race going into the final round did not disappoint as both the Pirates and the Saints battled down the back nine, but the Flagler trio of Joel Dahlenburg, Greg Mergel and Chris Bray carried the Saints to the title. Dahlenburg and Bray each fired one-over-par 71 scores and Mergel carded a 72, ensuring that Flagler would earn a second straight team title in Savannah.
Dahleburg finished the tournament with a one-over-par 211 total to capture individual medalist honors by two strokes over Armstrong junior Matt Motes. Motes matched Dahlenburg with a final-round 71 on Tuesday to finish second with a three-over-par 213 total.
The Saints three-round total of 936 (301-328-307) gave them a 96-over-par total and a 10th place finish, edging Clayton State University by 16 strokes as the Lakers rounded out the field at 112-over-par for the tournament.
Howard Duffin led the Saints, finishing in a tie for 25th place overall as the junior fired a final round six-over-par 76, while teammate Brian Mallory wedged an 85 between round of 72 and 76 to finish in 32nd position with a 233 total.
Matt Rochlin recorded a final round 78 to finish in 46th place, while Grant Rish and Dillon Bowers put together Tuesday rounds of 77 and 94 respectively to finish in 51st and 65th places and round out the Saints' scoring.
North Georgia returns to action on March 4, 2011, playing host to the University of Dayton Ohio for a head-to-head match with the Flyers. The single-round event will take place at Reynolds Plantation.
