Saints Weather Tornados, Pick Up 4-2 Victory

BREVARD, NC – North Georgia College & State University picked up a much-needed victory Saturday afternoon, scoring a season-high four goals on their way to a 4-2 win over Brevard College in non-conference action.

The Saints scored a pair of goals in each half as they improve to 4-5 on the season, while the Tornados continue to spiral out of control, falling to 1-10 on the year.

North Georgia jumped all over Brevard in the early going, scoring in the 7th minute as Chris Griffith took a pass from Justin Gonzales and netted his team-leading third goal of the year to give the Saints a 1-0 lead.

The Saints would add to their lead 12 minutes later as Gonzales was in the middle of the action again, sending a shot off the post that rebounded to Juan Hurtado who sent it home to give North Georgia a 2-0 advantage.

Just after halftime, Brevard scored their first goal of the game after a penalty was awarded to the Tornados in the 48th minute. Ian Townson took the kick and fired it past North Georgia keeper Rade Tanaskovic to cut the Saints’ lead in half at 2-1.

Hurtado and the Saints would fight back and answer with the goal that proved to the difference in the 72nd minute as the Cali, Colombia, native scored his second career goal to give North Georgia a 3-1 advantage.

The Tornados cut North Georgia’s lead to one goal in the 79th minute, but Tyler Bivens answered in the final minutes with his first goal of the year as the Saints cruised to a 4-2 victory over Brevard.

North Georgia held a 16-14 advantage in shots, while the Saints were awarded 16 corner kicks to Brevard’s four.

Tanaskovic went the distance in goal for the Saints, recording three saves in the victory, while Brevard keeper Jack Shaw suffered the loss, allowing all four North Georgia goals while tallying three saves in the complete-game effort.

The Saints will have 11 days off before playing their next contest as North Georgia returns to Peach Belt Conference action on Saturday, October 14, at 3:30 p.m. The Hurricanes of Georgia Southwestern make their way to Dahlonega as the in-state rivals will tangle at the Soccer Complex.
