Saints Avoid Tornado Touchdown, Handle Brevard 4-0
DAHLONEGA, GA – The North Georgia men's soccer team sent their seniors off in style in the their final home game, as the Saints dismantled Brevard College and ran by the Tornados 4-0 on a foggy Wednesday evening in non-conference action.
The Saints two-game skid comes to an end, improving to 8-5-3 overall on the season, while Brevard falls to 3-13-1 on the year. North Georgia honored their four seniors following the game as Stan Soulen, Ben Chedgy, Ben Ellgass, and Chris Aiken all played in their final home game for the Saints.
North Georgia jumped on top in the 26th minute as Ben Tayi slid a pass through the interior of the defense and found Juan Hurtado who scored his second goal of the season to give the Saints a 1-0 advantage.
Gray Phelps added to the lead just three minutes later, taking a free kick from five yards outside the box and burying a shot inside the top right corner to extend the North Georgia lead to a pair of goal.
Senior Stan Soulen got chance in the second half has a handball in the box set the Newnan, Ga., native up for a penalty kick and he drilled home his first score of the season, giving the Saints a four-goal advantage.
The Tornados had their best scoring chance in the 81st minute as Renato Barbosa lined up for a free just on the edge of the box, but Rade Tanaskovic dove to his left and deflected the attempt for his lone save of the game to keep Brevard off the board.
The Saints will now turn their focus to Saturday and the final regular season contest of the season on the road at UNC Pembroke. Kickoff against the Braves is set for 3:30 p.m.
