AUGUSTA, GA. – After leading the North Georgia men's soccer team to a 3-1 victory over Francis Marion in the last game of the regular season, freshman phenom Manuel Hernandez was named the Peach Belt Conference Offensive Player of the Week.
The league office announced the news Monday afternoon, just before North Georgia fell 1-0 to Clayton State in the opening round of the Peach Belt Conference Tournament.
In his first collegiate season, Hernandez has had a huge impact leading the team in scoring with seven goals, which leaves him in a tie for ninth in the conference. His 15 points are also good enough for 11th in the conference.
In the Saints only game last week, Hernandez score the first and last goals for the Saints. Early in the first half, he received a booming free kick from senior keeper Rade Tanaskovic and put it home from 13 yards out to open the scoring, he then had a chip in the second half to close it out.
During his freshman campaign, Hernandez has appeared in all 17 games for the Saints while starting in 14 of them for head coach Pat Parris. He has had two multi-goal games this year and one game-winner.
Hernandez was the only Saint to earn Offensive Player of the Week honors this fall and he was the first to win the award since Terry Gibbs in September of 2008.
