Saints Open Pre-Season with 1-0 Victory Over Division I Mercer
MACON, Ga. – The North Georgia College & State men's soccer program wasted no time in opening their 2012 pre-season campaign as the Saints traveled to Macon, Ga. Tuesday evening to take on the Bears of Mercer University in an exhibition match. Just a day removed from opening up practice for the new athletic year, the Saints downed the NCAA Division I institution 1-0.
Mercer came out of the gates with a blistering attack early, logging two shots in the opening13 minutes of competition before North Georgia could take a shot of its own.
But when the Saints did break through, they did so in fine fashion as junior Jose Pinedo found the back of the net on North Georgia's first shot of the game off an assist by Gustavo Cunha just 16:36 into the match.
The Saints would go on to take just two more shots in the first half and another four in the second while Mercer continued to test North Georgia's defense with 12 total shots evenly spread between the two halves. The Bears also held the advantage in corner kicks 3-0.
Between the pipes for the Saints, Kristopher Alonzo recorded six saves in the game while Mercer's Greg Ranjitsingh gave up the lone goal and recorded three saves.
The Saints will continue on with a busy pre-season as they resume practice and cap the week off with another road exhibition game at Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) on Saturday, August 18. North Georgia's second pre-season game will be at 5 p.m.
