ATLANTA, GA – Looking to win their third straight match to open the season on Sunday evening, the North Georgia men's tennis team battled Georgia State University and fell 7-0 at the Piedmont Park Tennis Center in non-conference action.
The Saints drop their first match of the season, falling to 2-1 overall on the year, while the Panthers, an NCAA Division I program and a member of the Colonial Athletic Conference, improves to 8-3 on the season.
North Georgia dropped the doubles point, falling in all three matches as Felipe Friedrich and Brandon Sloan fell 8-1 at No. 1, and Mateus Camasmie and Adrien Saulais came up on the short end of an 8-5 match at No 2.
Giovani Santos and Ernesto Farinas squared off with Lucas Santana and Juan Pablo Gutierrez at No. 3, and while the Saints held an early 1-0 lead in the match, the Panther duo rallied back to take four straight games before coming away with the 8-2 victory, giving Georgia State a sweep in doubles action.
Singles action proved to be a challenge for the Saints as well, but North Georgia put up plenty of fight against the Panthers, as Fredrich battled Gabe Townes at No. 1 but fell 6-3, 6-2. Santos forced Thomas Cook deep in both sets before falling 6-3, 7-5, while Camasmie fell 6-2, 6-4 to Victor Valente at No. 2.
The Saints will have a week off before returning to action on Sunday, February 20, welcoming Francis Marion to town to open the 2011 Peach Belt Conference slate. First serve at the Yahoola Creek Tennis Complex is set for 11:00 a.m. in Dahlonega.
