Saints Drop 6-3 PBC Battle with #14 Francis Marion

DAHLONEGA, GA – The North Georgia men's tennis team welcomed 14-ranked Francis Marion University to town on Sunday afternoon and the two squads did not disappoint the fans in attendance, as the Patriots battled past the Saints 6-3 in Peach Belt Conference action at the Yahoola Creek Tennis Complex.

North Georgia drops their opening league match of the season, falling to 2-2 overall and 0-1 in the Peach Belt Conference, while the 14th-ranked Patriots improve to 4-1 overall 1-1 in conference play.

The Saints salvaged one point in doubles play as Adrien Saulais and Mateus Camasmie outdueled Tim Ruepke and Dirk Blair 8-6 at No. 2 doubles, while Francis Marion was victorious in the remaining two matches to take a 2-1 lead into singles action.

Felipe Friedrich nearly pulled off what would have been one the biggest upsets in North Georgia history as the sophomore battled the No. 3 player in the country in Oshada Wijemanne at No. 3 singles. Friedrich took the opening set 7-6 in a tiebreaker, and had four match points to pull off the upset in a tiebreaker in the second set, but Wijemanne rallied to take the set before grabbing for the third set for the victory.

Camasmie got the job done at No. 2 singles, taking the opening set 6-2, before falling 5-7 in the second set to even the match. The freshman showed plenty of resolve in the third set however, rallying for a 6-4 victory to give the Saints their second point of the day.

Saulais proved to be too much for Tanguy Montoisy at No. 4 singles as the junior never blinked in a 6-3, 6-3 victory to hand North Georgia their final point of the match.

Brandon Sloan had an early lead at No. 5 singles, taking the opening set 7-6 (7-5), but FMU's Dirk Bair came alive and took the next two sets 6-2, 6-3 to come away with the win.

The Saints will look to rebound and get back in the win column on Tuesday afternoon, welcoming Newberry College to town for a non-conference showdown with the Wolves. First serve at the Yahoola Creek Tennis Facility is set for 2:00 p.m.
