#23 Men's Tennis Earns 7-2 Win Over Erskine
DUE WEST, S.C. – The 23rd ranked University of North Georgia men's tennis team traveled to Due West, S.C. Saturday for a region match against the Flying Fleet of Erskine College. The Saint men were victorious over the Fleet, returning home to Dahlonega with a 7-2 victory to improve to 2-0 for the season.
North Georgia completed a clean sweep of the doubles action with Felipe Friedrich and Matheus Guida, ranked ninth in the Southeast region as a doubles tandem, took down Jack West and James Hoatson at No. 1 doubles 8-2 for their first win in 2013. Sam Gantt and Giovani Santos teamed up at No. 2 doubles to defeat Wilson Matthews and Dean Harris 8-6 while Anthony Veryard and Matheus Pineda teamed up for the first time this season at No. 3 doubles with an 8-5 victory over Alan Pearce and Matthew Twitty.
In singles action, Friedrich, Guida, Ernesto Farinas and Mario Mesquita all claimed victories over their opponents at No. 1, 2, 5 and 6 singles. Mesquita defeated Robert Clarke in straight sets (6-0, 6-0) while Guida was one set away from doing the same as he went 6-1, 6-0 to claim the win over Hoatson.
Farinas' win over Pearce at No. 5 singles came down to a 10-point tie breaker that Farinas captured 13-11 since he had to win by at least two.
The Saints will continue their season on the road next Tuesday, Feb. 12 with a 2:00 p.m. match at Newberry College. Both the men and the women will be in action.
