No. 23 Men's Tennis Fall 4-5, Women 1-8 to Nationally-Ranked Francis Marion
DAHLONEGA, Ga. – The University of North Georgia men's and women's tennis teams battled hard Saturday, but were unable to claim a win over the nationally-ranked tennis teams from Francis Marion University. The Saints' men's team, ranked No. 23 in the nation, fell 4-5 to the 20th-ranked Patriots while the Saint women fell 1-8 to the 10th-ranked women of FMU at the North Georgia Tennis Complex.
On the men's side, Felipe Friedrich played one of his best matches as he claimed a huge upset win over the No. 10 singles player in the nation. Friedrich defeated Alex Caspari, who is also No. 3 in the Southeast Region, 5-7, 6-4, 6-2 as the Saints claimed two of the six singles match ups.
Caspari and doubles partner Gavin Davison, ranked #12 in the nation in doubles, claimed the Patriots' only doubles win on the day, 9-7 over Friedrich and Matheus Guida at No. 1 doubles. Giovani Santos and Sam Gantt combined to defeat Tim Ruepke and Eimon Heywood 8-1 at No. 2 doubles while Mario Mesquita and Ernesto Farinas took down Marius Wahlier and Arnaud Holl 9-8.
But the Patriot men (5-0) were able to claim four of the singles matches despite the Saints (2-1) being up 4-3 with two final matches to play. The match for the men came down to the battle between Mesquita and Wahlier at No. 6 singles. Wahlier took the first set 6-4 with Mesquita bouncing back with a 1-6 victory in set two, but Wahlier finished things off 6-3 in the third.
On the women's side, the Saints (0-3) competed well against the 10th-ranked Patriots (5-0), but were only able to claim No. 6 singles thanks to senior Jordan Poole's 10-point tiebreaker over Nora Westbye.
Both teams will now hit the road for two straight matches against Columbus State University and the University of South Carolina Aiken before the women return home on Sunday, Feb. 24 to take on the University of North Carolina Pembroke. The Columbus State match is scheduled for Wednesday, Feb. 20 and the match with USC Aiken is scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 23.
