CHARLESTON, SC - The North Georgia Saints rifle team competed in their first major NCAA tournament this past weekend, hosted by The Citadel. Texas Christian University and Jacksonville State University, two of the top rifle programs in the country, were among the participants.
The tournament also served as the second league tournament for the Southeastern Rifle Conference.
On Saturday, team captain Becca Bryan posted her new personal best in standing air rifle with 568/600, good enough to take fifth place in the league competition. Cadet Matt Parsons was 15th with 565, followed by Cadet Chris Tiller and fellow freshman Luke Duncan to round out the team. North Georgia slipped behind Clemson in a close battle for third in the league team competition while NC State won the competition.
On Sunday, in NCAA three position smallbore competition, Cadet Tiller (543), senior Jason Crawford (524), and senior Brandon Heidmann (502 and just starting smallbore), all posted new personal bests. Combined with Cadet Parsons (555), the team set a new North Georgia school record (2165) for the revived smallbore program.
North Georgia will not compete again until Saturday, October 29, in a Southeastern Rifle Conference league tournament hosted by Georgia Military College.
