LEXINGTON, Va. – The University of North Georgia mixed rifle team traveled to Virginia Military Institute this past weekend, and returned home having beaten two of the host's three teams in the overall match aggregate.
In the morning session, half of the members of each team fired in the standing air rifle event and the other half shot in the three-position smallbore (.22) event. The two groups swapped events in the afternoon session.
UNG got off to a slow start in the morning session, but none of the four teams posted a strong advantage. Stepping up their game in the afternoon, the Saints put pressure on the host teams in the tight contest.
The VMI mixed team was able to hold on to edge UNG 4399 to 4395 for the overall win. The Saints easily handled the VMI women's (4327) and men's (4231) teams for a lock on second place. The four teams finished in the same order in the smallbore event, while the Saints swept the air rifle event to finish ahead of all 3 VMI teams.
The Saints return to action this weekend in a Southeastern Rifle Conference tournament hosted by The Citadel. The weekend's events also include the NRA Sectionals and NCAA championship qualifications.
