DAHLONEGA, GA –
The North Georgia softball team is ranked 11th in the 2009 National
Fastpitch Coaches Association Division II preseason Top 25 poll.
The NFCA preseason poll is voted on by 16 NCAA Division II head
coaches, two representing each of the eight NCAA regions.
The Saints move up one position after finishing 12th at the end of the 2008 season with a record of 35-18 and a trip to the NCAA South Atlantic Regional Championship game.
North Georgia will be tested early and often in the 2009 season with matchups against five teams in the preseason top 25, including games against the number four and five teams in the nation.
The Saints will take on #13 Lewis University, #22 Alabama-Huntsville, and #4 Barry University the second week of the season at the UAH Charger Chillout, before returning home to play Barry a second time around as North Georgia will host the Captain D’s Classic.
As the season rolls into April, the Saints will travel to #20 Georgia College & State University on April 1, before heading to Florence, South Carolina, three days later to take on the #4 Patriots.
For the first time in school history, North Georgia has been picked to win the Peach Belt Conference according to a poll of the league’s head coaches released last week. The Saints received five first-place votes to edge FMU with 76 total points to the Patriots 67.
The Saints will open the 2009 season on February 14th against Mars Hill College at the new Haines & Carolyn Hill Stadium. The stadium will feature 225 stadium-style chairback
seats and a state of the art press box.
