Saints Still Unanimous No. 1, Only Unbeaten in DII
– North Georgia stayed on top of the Softball world for the
fourth straight week as voters once against selected the Saints as
the nation’s unanimous No. 1 team in the latest NFCA Division
II Top 25 released Wednesday afternoon from Starkville,
The Saints are the nation’s top team for the fourth straight week, while receiving all 16 first place votes and the unanimous ranking for the third straight week.
North Georgia is the final unbeaten team in all of NCAA Division II, currently sitting at 29-0 following a pair of mid-week shutouts over the University of West Georgia on Wednesday afternoon, just hours after the poll was released to the public.
North Georgia is the only undefeated team at the NCAA Division I or Division II level, while the only company the Saints have comes from NCAA Division III where Louisiana College currently sits at 20-0 and the country’s top team for the division. Winona State split a pair of doubleheaders last week and fell from the top five and the unbeaten ranks, while previously undefeated Augustana dropped their first game of the season and fell from the latest poll.
Following the Saints at No. 1, Angelo State continues their hold on the second spot for the third straight week at 26-2, while Hawaii Pacific moved up one spot to claim third in the nation at 21-1. Valdosta State jumped back into the top five at No. 4 with a 17-3 record, while Wayne State holds serve as the No. 5 team in the land for second consecutive week.
Looming at the No. 6 spot is Alabama-Huntsville who moved up three spots and currently sit at 21-4 on the season. The Chargers travel to Dahlonega for the most anticipated matchup of the season as the Saints host UAH in clash of top-10 teams. North Georgia will then turn around on Tuesday afternoon and travel to Huntsville for a rematch as the 2009 World Series participants are set for four games in five days.
Augusta State is once again the only other team from the Peach Belt Conference in the latest top 25 poll, staying put as the No. 10 team after a week that saw the Jaguars suffer a doubleheader sweep at North Georgia. ASU currently sits at 27-9 overall and is one of two teams in the poll that are a defeat away from double-digit losses.
Sarah Phillips currently leads the North Georgia pitching staff at 23-0 on the season, posting an earned run average of 0.74, while opponents are hitting .152 against the junior right-hander.
Senior cleanup hitter Leslee Smith continues to see her average hover around the .400 mark as the Lexington, Ga., native is currently hitting .395 with seven home runs, 37 runs batted in, while slugging .815 with an on-base percentage of .424.
