#4 Saints Sweep Bobcats in Peach Belt Doubleheader

DAHLONEGA, GA – The 4th-ranked North Georgia softball team picked up two more wins on Tuesday evening, taking both ends of a doubleheader 8-0 and 3-1 over Georgia College at Haines & Carolyn Hill Stadium in Peach Belt Conference action.

The doubleheader served as the Saints' 6th annual Cancer Awareness game as survivors were honored between games, while the memories of those who lost their battle with cancer were remembered. All the proceeds from the event will be donated to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation.

The Saints improve to 30-8 overall with the wins and 6-2 in Peach Belt Conference action, while the Bobcats fall to 10-29 overall and 5-7 in league action.

North Georgia had the offense rolling in the opener, scoring in all but one inning for the 8-0 victory in five innings. After scoring a single run in the opening frame off a two-out single up the middle by Pilar Harden, the Saints added three more runs in the second inning, benefiting from two Bobcat errors to race out to a 4-0 lead.

The bats were quiet in the third inning, but Ansley Williams put the Saints right back on the board with a two-run home run to left field, plating Katie Garrett and giving North Georgia a 6-0 advantage.

Williams would end the game in the bottom of the fifth inning with a double down the left field line, sending Garrett home once again and giving North Georgia an 8-0 game-one victory.

Jessica Coan was the winner, going all 5.0 innings and allowing just one hit, while striking out three for her 14th win of the season.

The nightcap was all about pitching as the Saints came to bat in the fourth inning in a scoreless game, but Hilary Cox would have something to say about that, leading off with her league-leading 10th home run of the year to put the Saints in front 1-0. Callie Fernandez singled later in the frame as Katherine Martin raced home and made it 2-0.

The Bobcats scored their first run of the day in the sixth inning, using a single through the left side by Haley Burnett to plate Whitney Okvist and cut the North Georgia lead in half at 2-1.

The Saints plated an insurance run in the bottom of the inning on a sacrifice fly by Natasha Willemse, giving North Georgia all the runs they would need a 3-1 victory.

Coan (15-3) snagged her second win of the day in the contest, allowing a run on seven hits, while striking out eight.

North Georgia returns to action over the weekend, welcoming Francis Marion to town on Saturday for another Peach Belt Conference doubleheader. First pitch is slated for 1:00 p.m. at Haines & Carolyn Hill Stadium.
