Saints Place Four on Daktronics All-Region Team

DAHLONEGA, GA – The North Georgia softball team once again headlined the Daktronics Southeast All-Region teams that were released on Monday afternoon, placing four players on the squad.

Jessica Coan picked up the highest honors, earning Daktronics Southeast Region Pitcher of the Year, while Kasey Knight was named First-Team All-Region, while Sarah Phillips and Ansley Williams were both awarded Second-Team honors.

The awards for the four players come just one day removed from North Georgia capturing a third straight Dahlonega Regional Championship and advancing to the NCAA Super Regional round of the NCAA Tournament against Lenoir-Rhyne. The Super Regional will be a rematch from last year and will pair two of the top six teams in the country.

The awards continue to pile up for Coan, as the junior picks up Southeast Region Pitcher of the Year honors after earning Peach Belt Conference Pitcher of the Year honors just over a month ago. The Duluth, Ga., native continues to get better as the season rolls along, posting a record of 26-4 overall with 309 strikeouts in 199.1 innings of work. Opponents are hitting just .142 against the right-hander who has 24 complete-game victories and an earned run average of 0.77. In 16 of her 29 starts, she has posted double-digit strikeouts, including a 19-strikeout performance against 6th-ranked Lenoir-Rhyne, an opponent she will face once again in this weekend's Southeast Super Regional. Those 19 strikeouts put her in the NCAA record books for the second-most strikeouts in a 7-inning game.

Kasey Knight picks up her first-ever Daktronics First-Team All-Region honors, being selected to the team at shortstop as the senior is hitting a team-leading .361 with 75 hits and 31 runs batted in. She has just eight strikeouts in 208 at bats, as the First-Team Peach Belt All-Conference selection has played and started in all 59 games for the No. 2 team in the country. Knight has made just six errors at shortstop in 161 chances for a .963 fielding percentage.

Sarah Phillips makes her third straight appearance on the All-Region squad, picking up Second-Team honors after being named Region Pitcher of the Year in each of the last two seasons. She has a 20-4 record with an earned run average of 1.44 in 150.1 innings of work. The Powell, Ohio, native has tallied 130 strikeouts on the year, while opponents are hitting .183 against the right-hander.

As the leadoff hitter for the No. 2 team in the land, Ansley Williams continues to impress as a freshman, picking up Second-Team All-Region honors as the slugger is hitting .345 with 12 doubles, 12 home runs, and 41 runs batted in. Williams has played and started in all 59 games for the Saints and put together 19 games with multiple hits, including an eight-game hitting streak during the year. A two-team Peach Belt Conference Freshman of the Week winner, the Cartersville, Ga., native has an on base percentage of .427 and is 18-for-20 in the stolen base department.

The teams are sponsored by Daktronics, Inc., an acknowledged world leader in scoring, timing and programmable display systems for virtually every sport at every level of competition. The teams were nominated and voted on by the Southeast Region's Sports Information Directors and members of the first team are eligible for All-American nominations.
