SALEM, VA – The North Georgia softball team had a busy Wednesday on their first full day at the NCAA Division II World Series, as the Saints are less than 24 hours away from their opening round game against Indiana (Pa.).
The Saints departed the Sheraton Hotel Wednesday morning at 8:30 a.m. and traveled to a nearby school to read and interact with the children of George Washington Carver Elementary.
The team split into four groups and rotated between kindergarten and first grade classes to read with students, tell them about life as a college athlete, show them pictures of life back in Georgia, and hand out Saints gear to their newest fans.
After loading back up on the bus and taking a quick tour of historic downtown Salem and Roanoke College, the Saints made their way to the Moyer Sports Complex for a BBQ meal with the seven other teams at the World Series.
Following lunch, some high-pitched karaoke, and a few games of corn hole, North Georgia turned into all business as they stepped onto the championship field for two hours of practice.
This evening, North Georgia will travel to the NCAA National Championship banquet where teams will be recognized and the NFCA will unveil the 2011 NCAA Division II All-American team.
The Saints will play the third game of the day on Thursday, taking on Indiana (Pa.) at 5:00 p.m. at the Moyer Sports Complex. North Georgia is 2-0 all-time in opening games at the National Championships.
NCAA.com will have a live broadcast of the event, and Johnny B's in Dahlonega will show the opening round game live on a high definition projection screen. Make sure to check out Johnny's B's new menu and watch North Georgia look to claim a National Title.
