SPARTANBURG, SC – The No. 4-ranked Saints softball team started the 2012 Mid-South Classic weekend off with two dominating wins over Carson-Newman and West Liberty at the new Tyger River Sports Park.
Game 1 vs. Carson-Newman (NG 6-1)
Jessica Coan (10-3) continued dominating her 2012 senior campaign, throwing her ninth complete game of the season while not allowing an earned run. Coan also struck out 14 batters, her second highest single-game total of the season (18 against Belmont Abbey on February 22).
North Georgia (15-3) had the bats going as they knocked out 12 hits, also their second highest single-game total this season as well.
The Saints put up two separate three-run innings, coming in the third and sixth innings.
Pilar Harden led the way going 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored. Three other players finished with multi-hit games.
Game 2 vs. West Liberty (NG 9-1/5 innings)
Freshman Melissa Dickie (6-0) kept her perfect record intact, as she picked up her sixth victory of the season quite easily. Dickie struck out 10 Hilltoppers, her career-high in a game to this point.
The Saints (16-3) got a boost from another freshman in Rochelle Shuman. Shuman went 4-for-5 with two RBI's en route to North Georgia's third 8-run rule game of the year.
Johnson was 2-for-3 with two runs scored, including a double.
Despite not recording a hit, Harden recorded three RBI's while drawing a career-high four walks.
Third basemen Karlie Gillam went 3-for-3 with a run scored. Gillam has come on strong since moving to the fifth spot of the lineup.
West Liberty used three different pitchers in hopes of slowing down the hot Saints, but all three struggled to get outs.
North Georgia has two more games on tap for tomorrow, including one against 22nd-ranked Lenoir-Rhyne at 12:00 noon. The Saints also play Catawba at 4:00 PM.
