Softball Moves up to Sixth in Weekly NFCA Poll

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The University of North Georgia softball team jumped up three spots in the most recent National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Top-25 Poll after sweeping the last seven games, coming in at No. 6 this week.

The Saints (25-6, 5-1 PBC) have now won seven straight games with doubleheader sweeps over Belmont Abbey College, the University of South Carolina Aiken and Lander University. They are currently tied with fourth-ranked Armstrong Atlantic State University (22-3-1, 5-1 PBC) for the top spot in the conference race.

Sophomores Melissa Dickie and Kim McMillan led the team last week and earned weekly recognition from the PBC office. Dickie, who went 3-0 with a shutout and a 0.35 earned run average in 20 innings of work last week, was named the conference's Pitcher of the Week. McMillan was named the PBC Player of the Week after batting .562 with four doubles, a home run and at least one hit in all six games last week.

West Texas A&M University (21-2) held on to the top spot in the poll after surpassing Valdosta State University (23-6) last week. The Buffs received 15 of the 16 first-place votes while Indianapolis (20-2), Valdosta State, Armstrong Atlantic and Southeastern Oklahoma State (25-6) rounded out the rest of the top-five. The Blazers of Valdosta State received the final first-place vote.

Fellow PBC institution Columbus State University (22-11, 6-2 PBC) moved up to 20th in the current poll after checking in at 24th last week.

North Georgia will hit the road for three PBC road doubleheaders in a row. The Saints will first travel to Milledgeville, Ga. on Thursday, Mar. 21 where they will play Georgia College in a 5:00 p.m. twinbill. The Saints will then travel to Francis Marion University and the University of North Carolina Pembroke for games on Saturday, Mar. 23 and Sunday, Mar. 24.

The NFCA Division II Top 25 Poll is voted on by 16 NCAA Division II head coaches, two representing each of the eight NCAA regions. The entire NFCA Top-25 Poll can be found HERE.
