Lady Saints Win Third Straight, Fend Off Pirates

SAVANNAH, GA – The North Georgia women’s basketball team put a lid on a perfect two-game road trip on Saturday afternoon, taking down Armstrong Atlantic State University 68-60 in Alumni Arena in Peach Belt Conference action.

The Lady Saints win their third straight game and improve to 8-10 overall on the season and move to 3-6 in the Peach Belt Conference. The Lady Pirates fall to 6-12 on the year and 3-7 in league action.

North Georgia continued a recent trend of getting off to a hot start in the opening minutes, this time using a 12-2 run to open to the game with a double-digit lead with 16:28 remaining in the first half. The Lady Saints led by as many as 15 at two different points in the first half, but Armstrong Atlantic came back and pulled to within six points at intermission.

The second half proved to be a back and forward affair as Armstrong Atlantic took their first lead of the game with 13:16 remaining as Portia Jones hit a layup to give the Lady Pirates a 40-39 advantage.

Six lead changes later, North Georgia took the lead for good with 8:25 remaining as Whitney Randolph knocked down a pair of free throws to give the Lady Saints a 48-46 lead. Janyce Ealey’s layup gave her team their largest lead of the half at 11 points with 29 seconds remaining, before the Lady Saints held on for the eight-point victory.

Randolph continued her stellar play with 22 points and 11 rebounds for a double-double, while Sarah Stinson matched her teammate with a double-double of her own, posting 11 points and as many rebounds. Ealey was the only other North Georgia player in double figures with 17 points on 7-14 shooting from the field.

A trio of Armstrong Atlantic players finished in double figures, led by Jazmin Walker who tallied 18, followed by Lauren Hall with 17, and Jones with 16.

The Lady Saints shot 35.9 percent from the field, 25 percent from long range, and 71.4 percent from the free throw line, while Armstrong Atlantic was 35 percent from the floor, 26.9 percent from behind the arc, and 57.9 percent from the charity stripe.

North Georgia returns to action on Wednesday evening, hitting the road once again for another road contest, this time on the campus of Georgia College & State University at the Centennial Center. Tip-off is slated for 5:30 p.m. against the Bobcats.
