DAHLONEGA, GA – Before the North Georgia women's basketball team made their way into the gym to begin preparation for the 2010-11 season, the Lady Saints were hard at work serving one of the premier environmental education centers in Georgia.

On September 24, 2010, head women's basketball coach Buffie Burson took her squad to the Elachee Nature Science Center, which serves over 35,000 students from more than 35 schools systems and an additional 30,000 visitors each year.

The team assisted in preparation for the Elachee's primary event, the "Safari Fall Fundraiser," an event designed to raise money for this private not-for-profit organization that relies on fundraising opportunities to continue their service to the community.

The players and coaching staff enjoyed an October Friday afternoon outdoors setting up auction items, chairs and tables, and also helped prepare food for the low country boil being served at the auction. Elachee's nature guide also gave the Lady Saints a tour of the Museum Complex and the live animal display.

Located in the 1,500-acre Chicopee Woods Nature Preserve in North Georgia, Elachee is celebrating more than 30 years of building environmental literacy for Georgians through quality educational experiences, museum exhibitions, special programs, and resources for schools and the general public.

Elachee's curriculum is designed to develop a healthy ecological consciousness and includes preschool, elementary, and secondary education programs paralleling the Georgia Performance Standards. Other offerings include teacher education, summer day camp, special public programs, scout and home school programs, children's birthday parties, and facility rentals.

Chicopee Woods Nature Preserve serves as an invaluable outdoor classroom and is being preserved in a wilderness state. Elachee serves as the trustee for the Preserve in concert with the Chicopee Woods Park Commission. Elachee is a private not-for-profit institution supported by program fees, memberships, fundraising events, museum admissions, and donations from corporations, & foundations.

The Lady Saints will also assist Elachee for their spring fundraising event called the "Flights of Fancy," as well as volunteer for trail clean-up days.
