Basketball Set to Open PBC Play at Augusta State
DAHLONEGA, GA – The North Georgia men's and women's basketball teams are set to travel to Augusta, Ga., on Monday to open Peach Belt Conference action against Augusta State University in Christenberry Fieldhouse.
WOMEN'S GAME: NORTH GEORGIA (9-2, 0-0 PBC) VS. AUGUSTA STATE (6-3 0-2 PBC)
The Lady Saints, who enter Monday's PBC opener at 9-2 on the year, will take on Augusta State for the 25th time in program history. North Georgia is 11-13 all-time against the Jaguars, but hold a 5-3 advantage since entering the NCAA five years ago, including three straight wins dating back to a season sweep of ASU in 2008-09.
Since destroying the league in 2005-06 with a 19-1 mark, the Lady Saints have seen their share of struggles, recording a 25-48 mark in league action and have yet to hit double-digit wins in conference play since their PBC Championship season.
Head coach Buffie Burson and the Lady Saints appear to be on the way back to championship form as the 2010-11 team, at 9-2 on the season, match the program's best start in the last eight years. The last time a North Georgia women's basketball team put a together a better start was in 2003 when the squad opened the year 20-2 and went on to win 30 games and make an appearance at the NAIA National Championships.
The Lady Saints will play just their third true away of the game of the season at Augusta State, recording a 6-1 record at home, a 1-1 record at neutral sites, and a perfect 2-0 mark on the road. The Lady Saints are 3-2 all-time in PBC openers as North Georgia looks to remain perfect on the road Monday evening in Christenberry Fieldhouse.
MEN'S GAME: NORTH GEORGIA (3-6, 0-0 PBC) VS. #5 AUGUSTA STATE (10-0 2-0 PBC)
The men's basketball team will have a daunting task on Monday evening as they travel to Augusta State University to take on the 5th-ranked Jaguars for the 9th time in program history. The Saints are 2-6 all-time against Augusta State and will look for their second straight victory as they open Peach Belt Conference action.
Augusta State's three-year run to the NCAA Division II National Championships have kept the Jaguars in the National Rankings for 55 straight weeks dating back to the 2006-07 season. North Georgia is 1-4 the last three years against the Jaguars, and ASU has been ranked in the top-15 all five times, with top-10 rankings during the last four meetings.
The Saints will have some good memories to pull from in Christenberry Fieldhouse as North Georgia upset then 13th-ranked Augusta State in 2008, taking down the Jags for their only home loss of the season as ASU went on to play in the NCAA Division II National Championship game.
Augusta State was ranked 3rd in the country when the two teams met last season, and were ranked 6th and 7th respectively when the Jags swept the season series in 2008-09 that included a thrilling double-overtime contest in Memorial Hall.
The Saints are 45-48 all-time in Peach Belt Conference games and have a 2-3 record in PBC openers, with one of those victories coming against Augusta State on November 23, 2005, in North Georgia's first-ever PBC contest.
