MONTEVALLO, AL – With postseason play on the line Saturday afternoon at the University of Montevallo, the North Georgia women's basketball team came up short, falling 55-48 to the Falcons at BankTrust Arena in Peach Belt Conference action.
In a win or go home situation for both teams fighting for the fourth and final spot in the upcoming Peach Belt Conference Tournament, Montevallo (11-15, 6-11) was clutch down the stretch and now lives to see another day. The Falcons will take on the No. 1 seed from the east division in the opening round of the PBC Tournament.
For the second straight year, North Georgia (12-14, 6-11) lost their regular season finale and their spot in postseason play. The Lady Saints finished tied with the Falcons for the fourth spot in the west division, but Montevallo's season sweep of North Georgia propelled them to postseason play.
The Falcons would slam the door from there however, connecting on four of their five free throws over the final 1:15 and holding the Lady Saints scoreless to snag a seven-point victory at home.
Carnes led the way in scoring for North Georgia as she has done all year, putting up 22 points and pulling down 14 rebounds for another double-double. The Gainesville, Georgia, native capped a stellar sophomore campaign that saw her average a nation-leading 25.0 points per game and 11.2 rebounds per contest.
Stephanie Huffman was the only other North Georgia player in double figures, finishing with 13 points and 10 rebounds to add a double-double of her own. She was 6-for-7 from the free throw line and 3-for-10 from the field in all 40 minutes of action.
Head coach Buffie Burson will have plenty of young talent to build on for next year with just two players graduating from the squad. All five starters are underclassmen and have a bright future for the Lady Saints in the coming years.
