Women’s Basketball Hosting Lady Saints Tip-Off Classic

DAHLONEGA, Ga. – While the rest of the college basketball world has started the 2012-13 season, the North Georgia College & State University women's basketball team will open its season this weekend by hosting the two-day Lady Saints Tip-Off Classic on Friday, Nov. 16 and Saturday, Nov. 17 inside Memorial Hall Gymnasium.

Participating teams will include Carson-Newman College, fellow Peach Belt Conference school Georgia College & State University and the University of West Florida.

The Bobcats of Georgia College will kick-start the tournament with a 4:00 p.m. game against the Argonauts of West Florida on Friday. Following that contest, the Saints will host the Eagles of Carson-Newman in the night-cap with tip-off slated for 6:00 p.m.

The following day, Georgia College and Carson-Newman will square off on the hardwood starting at 2:00 p.m. with North Georgia and West Florida closing out the classic with a 4:00 p.m. matchup.

The Saints had their final tuneup of the season last Friday, Nov. 9 in an exhibtion against LaGrange College. North Georgia claimed an 86-72 victory with the Saints finishing the game shooting 50.8% (31-61) from the field.

2012 Daktronics National Player of the Year Jaymee Carnes picked up right where she left off as she went 8-for-14 from the field and 6-for-9 from the charity stripe to score 22 points. The 6-0 junior forward from Gainesville, Ga. also brought down nine rebounds and had two blocks in the contest and appears poised to lead the Saints once again this season.

Sophomore guard Stephanie Huffman also picked up where she left off as she tallied 13 points in the victory. Along with newcomer Cierra Jackson, the pair combined for eight assists and eight steals.

6-3 junior transfer Mimi Hill had a solid performance as she gave North Georgia 12 points and brought down five rebounds while freshman guard Keeley Chester added 11 points of her own including going 5-for-5 from the field.

Carson-Newman is currently 1-1 on the season as they lost to Coker College 59-56 in their season-opener and before picking up a dominating 85-45 victory over Erskine College in the South Atlantic Conference – Conference Carolinas Challenge. The Saints hold a 3-2 all-time record over the Eagles but the two programs have not met in women's basketball since Dec. 17, 2008 when Carson-Newman claimed a 76-72 win over the Saints.

The Eagles shot 38.1% (51-134) from the field in their first two games and made 14 three-pointers but they are hitting on just 58.1% (25-43) of their chances from the free throw line.

Shyra Brown and Chente Markus are leading the Eagles in scoring with 13.0 and 10.0 points per game respectively. Brown also leads the team with 8.0 rebounds per contest and five steals while Markus and Jai Jai McLaughlin both have seven assists on the season.

North Georgia is 1-0 all-time against the Argonauts who are 0-2 already on the season with losses to Southern Indiana (70-53) and Barry (58-55) in their own McDonald Fleming Moorhead Tip-Off Classic. As a team, the Argonauts hit on just 31.9% (38-119) of their looks from the field including going 6-for-37 (.162) from three-point range.

They are led by Emily Erland and Hanna Vette who both averaged 10.0 points per game in the tournament. Erland leads the team with a 42.9% (6-14) shooting percentage from the field while Jaymie Druding leads the team under the glass with 8.0 rebounds per contest.

Georgia College enters this weekend's tournament with a 0-1 record. The Bobcats fell 75-52 at home in their season-opener to the University of West Georgia this past Saturday.

The Bobcats shot 33.3% (17-51) from the field including making just one three-pointer and had two players finish in double-digit figures for points led by Shanteona Keys' 14. Tara Wornica added 13 and went 4-6 from the field and 5-9 from the free throw line.

Belinda Schaafsma and Enisha Donley led the team off the glass with six rebounds each.
