Women's Golf Takes 8th Place on St. Simons Island
ST. SIMONS ISLAND, GA – The North Georgia women's golf team rounded out the field of eight teams in their first tournament of the year at the Coastal Georgia Women's Winter Invitational at Sea Island Golf Club.
Mercer University came out on top in the event, erasing a six-stroke deficit heading into Tuesday's final round to finish at 70-over-par for the championship and overcome Shorter College who finished a stroke behind the Bears. SCAD Savannah took third, finishing four five strokes off the pace, while West Georgia was fourth and Coastal Georgia fifth.
Young Harris College took sixth place overall and SCAD Atlanta was seventh. North Georgia rounded out the field in eighth place, firing rounds of 396 and 369 to finish at 765 for the tournament and 189-over-par for the two-day event.
Mercer's Aurelie Wiriath and Shorter's Greta Lange finished deadlocked at 11-over-par after the 36-hole tournament, but Wiriath's final-round 75 gave her the title. SCAD Savannah's Mary-Michael Burns finished just one stroke off the lead, putting together a 1-over-par 73 in the opening round, but falling behind the pace with an 83 in the final round to finish on the outside looking in.
Catalina Olarte finished in a tie for 12th place overall, putting together rounds of 87 and 80 to tally a 23-over-par 167 for the championship. Casey Truelove ended the tournament alone in 36th place with a 54-over-par 198.
The Lady Saints are back in action in two weeks at the Cougar Invitational at the Country Club of Columbus. The two-round event is scheduled for February 18, through March 1, 2011.
