DAHLONEGA, GA – The Lady Saints made things interesting against Carson-Newman late on Saturday afternoon, but finished off the visiting Eagles, 3-2, to remain undefeated on the season.
North Georgia (9-0) stayed perfect on the year, but needed three goals to do so. After starting goalkeeper Kirsten Ross went down with an injury just before the end of the first half, backup Taylor Fragnito was thrown into the thrust with the game tied at one.
Fragnito made the game interesting with a couple minutes to play when she let a shot from about 40 yards get over her head and into the net. The Lady Saints would hold strong from then to pick up the hard-earned victory.
Emily Dover added another goal to her resume to get the scoring started in the 25th minute. Megan Morrow sent a ball to Kelsey Martin who then sent a beautiful through-ball to Dover on the break. Like she has done all season long, Dover finished strong to score her team and league leading eighth goal of the season. That is the eighth goal for Dover in the last seven games.
Abby Trevino scored her first two goals of the season for the Saints along with picking up her first game-winner. Both of Trevino's goals came in the second half and both were significant. The first coming in the 50th minute gave North Georgia the lead and the second coming in the 62nd minute turned out to be the most critical. Trevino has found her spot on the North Georgia attack quite incely following the injury to senior Danielle Brannan.
Natalie Douglas contributed on both goals for Trevino, tallying both of the assists. Douglas played outstanding in the midfield along with Kelly Penston. Douglas nearly scored on a laser that hit the crossbar. The ball was knocked right down to Trevino who finished for the game-winner.
Carson-Newman (3-5) gave the 11th-ranked Saints all they could handle on the road. The Eagles scored on two fortunate shots, in which probably should have been easy saves for the Lady Saints' keepers. As it was, they leave Dahlonega with a 3-2 loss and confidence heading into the stretch of their conference season.
Eagles forward Trenna Howell scored her ninth goal of the season in the 32nd minute. The goal came quite easy for her, as Ross misplayed the slow shot and it deflected off her hands and into the goal.
Taylor Fragnito picks up the win for North Georgia, recording her first decision of the season. She finished with three saves and allowed a goal in the 89th minute.
The Lady Saints now have a week to prepare for Flagler College. North Georgia will welcome in the other Saints of the Peach Belt Conference next Saturday at home. Kickoff is set for 5:00 PM.
