DAHLONEGA, Ga. – The North Georgia College & State women's soccer team acquired a pivotal Peach Belt Conference victory Wednesday night. In front of a large crowd of over 200 fans the Saints were able to clip the wings of the University of Montevallo Falcons with a 4-1 victory at the North Georgia Soccer Field.
The win pulls the Saints even in the PBC race with a 2-2 record and improves their overall record to 9-2 while the Falcons fall to 4-6-1 with a 1-4 mark in the league.
Junior Kelly Penston recorded two goals in the contest including the first goal of the game in the 21st minute. Penston acquired the ball near mid-field and proceeded to dribble towards the goal, avoiding several defenders along the way, and once in the box, she easily placed the ball into the net to give North Georgia the 1-0 lead at half time.
Six minutes into the second stanza, Kayla Croom gave North Georgia a 2-0 lead as she collected a loose ball that bounced around the box and found nothing but net.
Montevallo's Christine Prince was able to pull the Falcons back within one three minutes later, in the 54th minute, but it would be all the Falcons' offense could muster as the Saints were able to obtain two insurance goals to ice the game.
Abby Trevino recorded her seventh goal of the season in the 69th minute off a ball played into the box by Caroline Wallace before Penston recorded her seventh goal of the season off a penalty kick. The duo lead the team in scoring.
As they have done for much of the season, North Georgia held the advantage in shots 29-11, forcing Montevallo's Taylor Kerr to make seven saves while Mallory Sayre made three saves.
The Saints will next travel to Americus, Ga. on Saturday, Oct. 6 where they will take on the Hurricanes of Georgia Southwestern (2-7-1, 0-5 PBC). Both the men's and women's squads will be in action with the women starting the doubleheader with a 1 p.m. game. The men will follow shortly after at around 3:30 p.m.
