Women's Tennis Squad Impresses at ITA Regional

SUMTER, SC – The North Georgia women's tennis team saw their first action of the year over the weekend, traveling to the South Carolina for the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Southeastern Regional.

In the Women's Singles B-Draw, Laura Chapman put together an impressive performance, winning four straight matches after an opening round bye to advance to the semifinals. Straight set wins over Francis Marion's Caitlin Siney and Columbus State's Renata Paiva setup a quarterfinal showdown against Clayton State's Jessica Budd as Chapman advanced 6-1, 6-4 against the conference rival.

Audrey Marlette advanced past Converse College's Lindsey Kelly in a three-set thriller 5-7, 6-2, 7-5 in the second round, while Jordan Poole recorded wins by default in the first two rounds before sneaking by Converse's Stella Ford 5-7, 6-1, 6-4 in the round of 32.

After moving to the consolation bracket, Stasa Vujosevic rallied to defeat Pfeiffer University's Briana Oliver 6-3, 6-0. Juliana Moscoso also dropped to the consolation round, but made her way through the draw with a series of default wins.

Matilda Watson dropped her first match of the weekend, and after moving to the consolation bracket, fell 6-1, 6-0 to Erskine College's Katie Sailors.

In doubles action, Chapman and Vujosevic opened the weekend with an 8-2 victory over Tracy Bain and Kelly Edwards from GCSU, and continued to run by Converse College's Lindsey Kelly and Olivia Self with an 8-3 before falling to a duo from Flagler College.

The ITA Regional Championships, sponsored by the USTA, date back to 1981 and for nearly two decades were also known as the Rolex Regional Championships. The ITA Regional Championships featured the top men's and women's players from each of the ITA's regions. All in all, 8,000 varsity tennis players from 600 schools participated in the USTA/ITA Regional Championships.
