YOUNG HARRIS, GA – The North Georgia women's tennis team opened the 2011 season on Tuesday afternoon, traveling to nearby Young Harris College and blanking the Mountain Lions 9-0 at the YHC Tennis Complex.
The Lady Saints pick up their season opener, improving to 1-0 on the year, while the Young Harris drops their second straight match to a Peach Belt Conference school to open the year, falling to 0-2 on the young season.
North Georgia got off to a hot start as the Lady Saints swept all three doubles matches, giving up just nine total games combined to race out to a 3-0 lead. Stasa Vujosevic and Laura Chapman captured an 8-1 at No. 1, while Jordan Poole and Audrey Marlette pulled out an 8-3 decision at the No. 2 position. The closest of the three doubles matches took place at No. 3, where Juliana Chiang and Matilda Watson held on for an 8-5 win.
The Mountain Lions put up little resistance in singles action as Young Harris only managed to win as many as three games in four of the six matches. Chiang was pushed to the limit at the No. 3 position, taking the second set 7-5 to win the match, while at the No. 6 slot, Watson pulled out a 10-7 thriller in the third set to secure the 9-0 North Georgia victory.
The Lady Saints return to action in Dahlonega on Saturday, February 12, playing their home opener against West Alabama in non-conference action. First serve is set for 1:00 p.m. at the North Georgia Tennis Complex at Yahoola Creek Park.
