SUMTER, SC - The North Georgia women's tennis team wrapped up their first weekend of action in the fall, competing in the 2011 USTA/Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Southeast Regional Championships held at the Palmetto Tennis Center.
In the women's Single-A draw, sixth seeded Laura Chapman cruised to an opening round victory over Anderson's Lauren Trumbull before falling to Peach Belt Conference rival Julia Graf of Francis Marion in round of 32 in straight sets 6-3, 6-2.
After the first day of action, three members of the Lady Saints took part in the women's Single-B draw in the round of 32. Audrey Marlette defeated Samantha Wohlers of Lees-McRae in straight sets 6-3, 6-1, before falling to Stormy Dvorak of Young Harris 6-3, 6-0.
Juliana Moscoco-Chiang outlasted Lander's Lori Flick, winning a three-set thriller 4-6, 6-2, 6-4 before losing to Erskine's April Horne 6-3, 6-1.
After receiving a first round bye, Maria V Casseres Romero fell to Peach Belt foe Michelle Lingner of Georgia College in straight sets 6-0, 6-0.
In doubles action, after winning their opening contest against UNC-Pembroke's Ally Johnson and Beverly Vause, the tandem of Chapman and Moscoco-Chiang defeated Francis Marion's Kelsey Coleman and Rachel Lovaas 8-1 before falling in the quarters to Avery Owen and Lauren Trumbull of Anderson 8-2.
Other members of the team were due to see in action in the consolation bracket, but the brackets were canceled due to inclement weather.
The ITA Regional Championships, sponsored by the USTA, date back to 1981 and for nearly two decades were also known as the Rolex Regional Championships. The ITA Regional Championships featured the top men's and women's players from each of the ITA's regions. All in all, 8,000 varsity tennis players from 600 schools participated in the USTA/ITA Regional Championships.
