DAHLONEGA, Ga. – The University of North Georgia women's tennis team battled hard over two days and less than ideal conditions at the North Georgia Tennis Complex, but ultimately fell 8-1 to Brenau University, ranked No. 3 in NAIA women's tennis.
The two teams made it through doubles play on Wednesday with the Tigers jumping out to a 3-0 lead. However, about halfway through singles play, rain made the courts too slick to continue play and forced the match to be suspended until Thursday afternoon.
Under much better conditions Thursday, the Saints batteled hard but were only able to claim the No. 6 singles victory by Jordan Poole who bested Kelley Cohron 6-3, 6-4.
Despite ultimately falling to the Tigers, the Saints were still able to push some matches to the brink. Natalia Escobar, Mathilda Baartvedt and Natasha Bertolucci all forced their singles matches to go to tiebreaker sets. Escobar, playing at No. 2 singles, fell 7-5 early in the first set, but bounced back with a 7-6 win before Marina Medina won 10-8 in the tiebreaker. Bertolucci bounced back from a 6-1 deficit in the first set to claim the second 6-0, but Sophie van Beljnum claimed the No. 5 singles win with a 10-8 tiebreaker victory.
North Georgia will next open its Peach Belt Conference schedule with a men's and women's match against Francis Marion University on Saturday, Feb. 16 at the North Georgia Tennis Complex. Doubles play will start promptly at 11:00 a.m.
