MORROW, Ga. – The University of North Georgia women's tennis team pushed the 32nd-ranked Clayton State University Lakers to the brink Saturday afternoon, but ultimately fell just short as the Lakers won the Peach Belt Conference match 5-4.
The Saints (7-11, 2-9 PBC) fell behind 2-1 early in the match to the Lakers (8-8, 7-5 PBC) in doubles action with Cameron Williams and Adalyn Hazelman claiming No. 2 doubles 8-5 while Clayton State took the other two match ups.
Mathilda Baartvedt then tied things up when she earned a win at No. 2 singles after Ivana Krommelova retired early.
The match came down to the decisions at No. 3, 4 and 6 singles – all three matches went to three sets. Natalia Escobar and Nela Handac both won their sets at No. 3 and No. 6 singles, but Hazelman fell despite battling hard to the very end.
The Saints will now travel to Montevallo, Ala. where the Falcons of the University of Montevallo await for a 12:00 p.m. match on Sunday, Apr. 7.
