Milledgeville, GA - The North Georgia College & State University cross country teams recorded at pair of fourth place finishes at the Georgia College & State University Pre Conference meet Saturday morning.
The men started the day with an 8K event as Columbus State won the race with a total score of 28, followed by Clayton State with 42 points and GCSU with 89. The Saints finished in fourth place with 133 points as senior Alan Schmitz led the team with an 18th place finish in 28:09.
Freshman Kyle Ashcroft finished just two spots behind Schmitz in his first collegiate place, crossing the line in 20th place with a time of 28:14.
Tyler Mattix and Alex Kenna finished just four seconds apart in 29th and 32nd place with times of 29:08 and 29:12 respectively. Teale Marchette returned for his sophomore year and rounded out the top five in 34th place with a time of 29:18.
The women followed with their 5K race and Columbus State came out on top once again with 36 points, edging out Augusta State who raced to a total score of 42. Host, GCSU came in third place with 91 points, followed by North Georgia with 114 points.
Emmy Lawalin led the way for the Lady Saints, finishing the course in 14th place with a time of 20:27. Freshman Katie Vance followed in 17th place with a time of 20:39, and Meghan Riggin crossed the line just five seconds later in 18th place with a time of 20:44.
Bea Nelligan and Candace Chumley finished just one second apart in 32nd and 33rd place with times of 21:32 and 21:33 respectively to round out the top five.
Both teams will be in action again next Saturday, traveling to Wingate University to take on the Region's best teams. The Pre-Regional event will get started at 9:15 a.m. with the men's race, followed by the women at 10:00 a.m.
