Flanigan Drafted by Giants in 29th round
Junior first baseman selected after All-American season
DAHLONEGA, GA - North Georgia College & State University's Rob Flanigan was selected by the San Francisco Giants in the 29th round of the 2008 Major League Baseball First-Year Players Draft Friday afternoon, one of eight players selected from the Peach Belt Conference.
Flanigan led a North Georgia team that made history in their first season eligible for postseason play since the institution entered the NCAA three seasons ago. Not only did the team finish the regular season winning 19 of their last 22 games, but they captured North Georgia's first PBC Tournament Championship for any sport, running through the bracket with four straight wins to claim the title and receive and automatic bid to the NCAA South Atlantic Regional.
Flanigan grabbed Peach Belt All-Conference honors, Rawlings/ABCA All-Southeast Region First-Team honors, and was named the schools first-ever NCAA First-Team All-American after hitting .403 with 20 home runs and 74 runs batted in.
Flanigan spoke recently about the remarkable season after being named First-Team All-American. "I'll never forget the pop-up Anders (Oster) caught to make the last out to win the Peach Belt Conference Championship and the dog-pile that followed," Flanigan said. "This is the first championship team I've ever been on and I am lucky to play with such a talented group of guys."
