Cantrell Picks Up 400th Victory at North Georgia
DAHLONEGA, GA – North Georgia College &
State University head baseball coach Tom Cantrell reached another
coaching milestone Tuesday evening, using a comeback 10-9 victory
over West Georgia to claim his 400th victory at North Georgia.
The 10th year head coach at North Georgia started the season with
a record of 373-195, and with the Saints current 27-22 mark, has
claimed his 400th victory for the program. In his fourth season in
the Peach Belt Conference, Cantrell has been named the PBC Coach of
the Year in 2007, and followed with a PBC Tournament Championship
in 2008.
Cantrell, who has made his way to Dahlonega from Dekalb College
and Georgia Perimeter College, has a career coaching record of
577-267, winning his 550th contest last season in the Saints 10-8
victory over Francis Marion University in the Peach Belt Conference
Tournament Championship game.
The 14th year head coach began his career at Georgia Perimeter
College (Dekalb) where he was a head coach from 1996-1999 before
restarting the North Georgia program in the spring of 2000. Since
that time, the Saints have been to six Regional Tournaments and
claimed NAIA Region XIII Championships in 2002 and 2004.
Cantrell collected the program’s 300th win just over two
years ago, defeating West Alabama 2-1 on February 10, 2007, while
the school’s 200th win came in April of 2004 with an 8-0
shutout of Shorter College.
The Saints have six non-conference games remaining on the 2009
schedule before traveling to Aiken, South Carolina, May 8-9, to
defend their Peach Belt Conference Tournament Championship. North
Georgia currently sits in fourth place in the Peach Belt with a
record of 15-12 in the league.
