DAHLONEGA, GA – 17th-ranked North Georgia
took a never-die team into the bottom of the ninth against
12th-ranked Delta State University and used a walk-off two-run
single to give the Saints an 11-10 victory over the Statesmen
Saturday afternoon at Bob Stein Stadium.
With the Saints trailing 10-9 heading to the last of the ninth,
North Georgia used a pair of hits, including a walk-off single from
Adam Baker to score Andre Airich and Jordan Erisman and thrill the
nearly 300 fans packed into Bob Stein Stadium.
North Georgia stays undefeated at 2-0 on the season, while Delta
State falls to 1-2 on the year after defeating Pfeiffer University
earlier in the day.
Pitching fell by the wayside Saturday evening as the pair of top
20 nationally ranked teams combined for 30 hits, 21 runs and three
home runs.
Delta State put a four spot on the board in the second inning as
Kellen Bozeman sent a bases loaded double to left center, scoring
three runs and giving the Statesmen a 5-1 second-inning lead.
After both teams put up single runs, North Georgia exploded in the
fifth inning on an Anders Oster three-run homer, his second in as
many days, as the Saints put four runs on the board to take a 7-6
lead.
North Georgia would not stay in the lead for long however, as DSU
came right back in the sixth inning with four runs on five hits,
including another double by Bozeman to score a pair.
The Saints pulled to within a run in the seventh as Baker sent a
two-run blast to right center, scoring Erisman and setting up the
ninth inning heroics.
Justin Yackee (2-0) picks up the win, his second in as many days,
tossing 1.2 innings and striking out one, while Brandon Hall is
tagged with the loss for Delta State.
The Saints go right back to action Sunday afternoon, hosting
Pfeiffer University at 12:00 p.m., before taking on this same
12th-ranked Delta State squad at 3:00 p.m.
