#12 Delta State Downs #17 Saints 6-3
DAHLONEGA, GA – North Georgia had the
bases full in the last of the ninth, but Delta State University
forced a ground ball to escape with a 6-3 win over the Saints
Sunday afternoon in non-conference action.
In a rematch of ranked teams after an 11-10 epic duel on Saturday
night, #12 Delta State forced the split and improves to 2-2 on the
young season, while #17 North Georgia falls to 2-1 as they wrap up
the weekend with Pfeiffer University later this afternoon.
Delta State jumped all over the Saints in the early going with a
run in the first, four in the third, and sent another run across in
the fourth to take a 6-0 lead. Cade Hoggard had the big blow for
the Statesmen with a three-run long ball that curled around the
left field foul pole to make it 5-0 in the third frame.
North Georgia used a pair of walks and a laser home run from Chad
Sage in the fifth inning to score Daniel Petitti and Adam Baker and
cut the lead in half at 6-3.
The Saints had a chance in the bottom of the ninth inning with the
bases loaded, but Levi Bishop coaxed a ground ball to second base
to end the game at 6-3.
Korey Cunningham (1-0) picked up the win for Delta State, lasting
6.0 innings and striking out six while giving up four hits and
three earned runs. Michael Patton (0-1) suffered the loss, allowing
all six runs, five of them earned, while striking out six.
