DAHLONEGA, GA – The 10th-ranked North
Georgia baseball team got all they could handle Wednesday afternoon
as they rallied from behind to defeat the University on Montevallo
16-9 at Bob Stein Stadium in non-conference action.
The Saints improve to 9-4 overall, while Montevallo falls to 11-5-1 on the season. The two teams combined for 25 runs, 33 hits, five doubles, and two home runs as the soon to be conference opponents slugged it out in front of 112 fans.
The Falcons seemed to be in complete control in the early going, leading 5-0 when the Saints came to the plate in the bottom of the third and pulled right back to within a run as Anders Oster and Andre Airich provided RBI hits to make it a 5-4 Montevallo advantage.
Montevallo scored in each of the first six innings, including a run in the fourth inning to make it 6-4, but the Saints rallied from behind again, this time scoring three runs on four hits to take a 7-6 lead after four innings of play. Petitti doubled home a run to start the scoring, while JD Burgess and Jordan Erisman followed with run scoring hits of their own in the three-run inning.
The Falcons came right back with two runs in the fifth and a single run in the sixth to take a 9-7 lead when North Georgia proved their bats were far from finished, scoring three in the sixth, five in the seventh, and one more in the eighth to take the 16-9 victory.
Erisman had a career day at the plate, going 5-5 with four runs scored, while Airich and Burgess each drove in four runs.
Caleb Copeland (1-0) picked up the victory in relief, tossing 1.0 inning and striking out one, while Jacob Rickett came on for 3.0 innings and struckout three to grab his second save of the year.
North Georgia returns to action over the weekend, hosting #22 Lander University for a three-game series in Peach Belt Conference action.
