Flagler Takes Finale with Walk-off Homer in 10th
ST. AUGUSTINE, FL
– Flagler College used a walk-off home run off the bat of
Dagmar Pena on Sunday afternoon to salvage the series finale as
North Georgia took two of three in the battle of the Saints at
Flagler Stadium.
In a weekend series that featured a trio of one-run games, North
Georgia moves to 33-16 on the year, while Flagler is now 28-22 on
the season.
A pair of stellar pitching performances was the story on Sunday
afternoon as Flagler’s Johnny Gaines (8-5) and North
Georgia’s Matt Adams both tossed complete games, but it was
Gaines who came out on top with the 10-inning victory. Adams (0-3)
was the tough-luck loser as the freshman tossed nine plus innings,
allowing just two runs on four hits, while walking just two and
striking out seven.
Craig Brisson now sits alone as North Georgia's all-time hit leader
as the senior took the fourth pitch of the game and lined a double
to center field, giving the Lawrenceville, Ga., 325 career base
knocks.
Chad Sage gave North Georgia the lead in the second inning,
blasting a solo home run to field, the first long ball of the
three-game series. Sage's team-leading 13the home run of the season
put the Saints on top 1-0.
Flagler wasted little time knotting the score at a run apiece as
the home Saints rallied with a run in the bottom half of the second
frame to make it a 1-1 game. Payne Maddox did the damage with a
single through the left side, sending Travis Coverston home who
reached on a walk, but it was Pena who provided the game-winner
with the solo shot to lead off the bottom of the 10th innings.
North Georgia returns to action on Wednesday evening, playing host
to Truett-McConnell College in what will be the Saints final home
game of the 2010 season. The event will serve as senior day for the
10 North Georgia seniors playing in their final games at Bob Stein
Stadium.
