Baseball Scores Five Straight, Top West Florida

PENSACOLA, FL – The North Georgia baseball team picked up their first series sweep of the year on Wednesday afternoon, scoring five unanswered runs to take down West Florida 6-4 at Jim Spooner Field in non-conference action.

The 27th-ranked Saints improve to 11-5 on the year and have won six of their last seven, while the Argonauts drop their third straight series, falling to 10-9 on the season.

North Georgia scored the game’s first run in the second inning as Chad Sage, the defending PBC Player of the Week, connected with his eighth home run of the year, a solo blast to right center to give the Saints a 1-0 lead.

West Florida answered in the bottom half of the inning with a groundout by Zach Cates to tie the game at a run apiece, and Ryan Day followed with a single to center field to give the Argonauts their first lead of the series at 2-1. West Florida added two more runs in the third inning as Zach Taylor launched a two-run homer to right center to give the home team a three-run edge at 4-1.

Brad Hall pulled the Saints to within a run in the fourth inning as the junior singled to right field, scoring Chad Sage and cutting the Argonauts lead to a pair at 4-2. North Georgia came back in the seventh and took the lead for good on a bases loaded double by Jordan Erisman, scoring three runs and giving the Saints a 5-4 advantage.

The Saints added an insurance run in the ninth as Sage singled to load the bases, leading to a West Florida balk to bring Brisson trotting home and give North Georgia a 6-4 come-from-behind victory.

Nick White (2-0) picked up the victory for the Saints in relief, tossing 2.2 innings and allowing two hits while striking out one. Jacob Rickett came on in the ninth recorded his third save of the season. The North Georgia bullpen combined to toss shutout ball in 6.2 innings of work, going through five pitchers and allowing just four hits while striking out three.

The Saints return to the diamond over the weekend, traveling to 23-ranked GCSU to take on the Bobcats in Peach Belt Conference action. A single game is slated for Friday evening at 6:00 p.m., followed by a doubleheader between the two ranked teams on Saturday afternoon with first pitch set for 2:00 p.m.
