DAHLONEGA, GA – The North Georgia baseball program and head coach Tom Cantrell have announced the addition of 11 players who are set to join the Saints for the 2013 season.
During the NCAA's recent early signing period, 11 players signed national letters of intent and are set to join the North Georgia baseball program next fall. 10 of the 11 players are from the state of Georgia, while one makes his way to Dahlonega from the sunshine state of Florida. Nine high school standouts and a pair of junior college transfers from Chattahoochee Valley Community College highlight one of the largest and most talented classes in school history.
The Saints are coming off a season where they went 34-20 overall and finished one victory shy of appearing in the PBC Tournament championship game for the third time in the last four years. North Georgia won nine of their first 10 games to open the season to post the program's best start in school history.
Plays for head coach Dwayne Sapp at North Oconee High School. He has lettered in baseball all four years, leading his team to four consecutive state playoff appearances. He also lettered in football for thee years, setting a trio of passing records and leading the squad to four straight playoff appearances, including capturing the school's first-ever regional championship. Blake was named Georgia Top 100 during his sophomore and junior seasons and was selected to play with sophomore Team Georgia in 2010 and junior Team Georgia last summer.
Plays for head coach Matt Champitto at Duluth High School. Hit .253 last season with two home runs and 21 runs batted in, earning him the team's "Quality at Bat" award during his junior year. He was named the team's Most Valuable Player during his freshman year, and earned Scholar Athlete honors during is sophomore and junior seasons.
Plays for head coach Ron Brooks at Buchholz High School, and plays travel ball under coach Stephen Barton. The three-time Scholar Athlete award winner earned the 2011 Rookie of the Year award and All-Area Honorable Mention. Started all 27 games during his junior season and was second on the team in runs scored with 24 and walks with 14, while recording a .978 fielding percentage.
Plays for head coach Russ Bayer at South Forsyth High School, and coach Brad Bouras during summer ball with Team Elite. A Georgia Top 100 in 2011, Devin was named All-Region, All-County and Offensive Player of the Year during his junior season. He hit .465 with a .600 on-base percentage with a .706 slugging percentage and .980 fielding percentage.
Plays for head coach Jim Cahill at North Forsyth High, and coach Brad Bouras during summer ball with Team Elite. A member of the National Association of High School Scholars, Alex hit .331 last season with 12 doubles, three triples and nine home runs. He had a .677 slugging percentage with a .476 on-base percentage during his junior campaign.
Plays for head coach Cliff Shelton at Greater Atlanta Christian. John was named the Gwinnett Dugout Club's Player of the Month during March of his sophomore season, and earned the Gwinnett Dugout Club Scott McIntire Hustle/Attitude award his junior campaign. He has played in 72 games during his high school career, tossing 93.2 innings with 81 strikeouts. He also has a .277 batting average with a .407 on-base percentage.
Played for head coach Brian Smith at Winder Barrow High School before starting his collegiate career at Connors State College and Chattahoochee Valley Community College. During his senior year in high school, Clint earned All-Northeast Georgia Pitcher honors, First-Team All-Region honors and was named All-State as a pitcher. He was selected to represent Team Georgia in the Heartland Classic in Oklahoma and won Pitcher of the Tournament. During his freshman year at Connors State College Clint was 7-1 in over 70 innings of work.
Plays for head coach Phil Williams at Landmark Christian High School. Named a Region 9-A First-Team All-Region selection in 2011, Jake hit .383 with four doubles, five triple, two home runs, 14 runs batted and 21 stolen bases. He was a 2011 Perfect Game Rawlings Underclass All-American Honorable Mention and was named to the Top Prospect Team and Top Prospect List at Perfect Game National Underclass Showcase in 2011. The switch hitter is a member of the National Honor Society. Jake has also played varsity football for two years at Landmark under coach Kenny Dallas. As a junior running back and kick returner, he totaled 1,171 total yards.
Plays for head coach David Smart at Northside High School. A four-year letterwinner, Chris was named the 2011 Pitcher of the Year, a Scholar Athlete in 2011 and Second-Team All Bi-City Honorable Mention in 2009. In 2011, he was 5-2 in 37 innings of work with 30 strikeouts, 10 walks and a 3.02 earned run average.
Played for head coach Brian Smith at Winder Barrow High School before starting his collegiate career last season at Chattahoochee Valley Community College. In high school, Trace was named the Barrow County Athlete of the Year and played on the Georgia All-State team following his senior year. He was named to the 8AAAA Dugout Club preseason team for three straight years, and earned Performance of the Year in Barrow County during his sophomore season with a no hitter. At Chattahoochee Valley Community College last season, he was 4-4 with a 3.47 earned run average and 67 strikeouts in 63 innings of work.
Played for head coach Chan Brown at Parkview High School where he led the Panthers to the 5A State Championship in 2011. Edwin hit .487 last season with six home runs, 21 runs batted in and a .708 slugging percentage. In 2011 Edwin was named a Scholar Athlete, First-Team All-Region, All-State Player of the Month in April and Braves 400 Club 2011 All-Stars Award.
