AUGUSTA, GA – Following the final game of the 2012 season last Wednesday, the Peach Belt Conference released the eight-team double elimination bracket for the upcoming Peach Belt Conference Tournament. The top four teams from each division advanced to tournament play, which begins Wednesday, May 8, at historic Golden Park in Columbus, Georgia.
After a 24-26 season that saw them go 13-17 in conference play, the North Georgia baseball team has earned the No. 4 seed in the west division and they will take on top-seeded and Peach Belt Conference regular season champion Armstrong in the opening round. The two squads will face off at 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday.
The Saints and Pirates will meet in the opening round for the second time in the last three seasons as North Georgia shutout Armstrong 5-0 in the first round last year and the Saints also won a 12-11 shootout in 2009.
This season the Pirates swept North Georgia taking all three games in Savannah by a combined score of 30-13. After a slow start the Pirates ran off 14 straight wins, including 11 in conference play to earn their first regular season title since 2003.
The Saints got off to hot start opening up at 11-3 and jumping to No. 15 country before dropping 11 of 13 contests. After dropping three of four conference series to open the season North Georgia rebounded winning four of the last six series to gain momentum heading into postseason play.
North Georgia has won at least two games in the conference tournament in three of the last four years since being eligible for postseason play.
Filling out the rest of the bracket are Montevallo vs. USC Aiken, Georgia College vs. Lander, Francis Marion vs. host Columbus State.
Head coach Tom Cantrell's squad is 8-4 all-time in the PBC Tournament, going a perfect 4-0 in 2008, 2-1 in 2009, 0-1 in 2010 and 2-2 in 2011.
The 2012 PBC Tournament will be played using the same bracket as the Division II World Series with two four-team brackets competing with a crossover on the third day. This format leads to a single championship game on Sunday, May 12, at 1:00 p.m.
The winner of the PBC Tournament receives an automatic bid to the NCAA Southeast Regional. PBC teams have won the regional and advanced to the World Series in eight of the past 11 years.
