AUGUSTA, Ga. – The University of North Georgia baseball team split the series-opening doubleheader with Augusta State University on Saturday afternoon. The Saints (5-12, 2-3 PBC) won the second game 12-3 after dropping the first 15-4 to the Jaguars (10-12, 4-5 PBC).
Game 1: Augusta State 15, North Georgia 4
Augusta State would answer in the bottom half with an RBI single by Hunter Boose and score two more in the second off another RBI single by Justin Appel.
After going scoreless for two innings, the Jaguars would score three in the bottom of the fifth to make the score 6-1. They would add another in the sixth off a double by Rice.
In the bottom of the seventh, Boose hit a 3-run double, scoring Appel, Nate Crown and JD Sabo, to stretch the lead to 10-1.
Augusta State would add another five insurance runs in the eighth in four back-to-back at-bats to make the score 15-1.
North Georgia scored three in the ninth, started by a Brett Wright double to score Cameron Crawford and Travis Naraine. After loading the bases, the Jaguars would walk Jesse Strickland, but the Saints could not score anymore and fell 15-4.
Kip Custer (5-4) got the win for the Jaguars, while Taylor Keinat (1-3) was credited with the loss for the Saints after pitching 4.1 innings and allowing six runs.
Game 2: North Georgia 12, Augusta State 3
Spivey opened the scoring again for the Saints as he singled to score Tremayne Toorie in the top of the first. In the third, Brad Barto got the second run for the Saints as he knocked in Spivey. Wright would double to score Devin Gearhart and Naraine and stretch the lead to 4-0.
Augusta State would get on the board in the bottom of the third as Crown singled, scoring Sabo and cutting the lead to three.
Spivey would pick up another RBI in the fourth as he scored Strickland. Augusta State would answer in the bottom half as Justin Mee scored on a throwing error by North Georgia to make the score 5-2.
It took until the seventh inning for the Saints to break through again. This time, Hooper and Toorie would get RBIs as they scored Barto and Wright, respectfully.
Barto would get two RBIs in the eighth as he doubled to score Gearhart and Naraine. Wright would come to the plate as the next batter and hit an RBI double of his own. He would score off a Jake McCurry grounder to make the score 11-2.
After a Jaguar run in the bottom of the eighth, Gearhart would knock in the final run as he reached on an error to score Toorie to get to the 12-3 final.
Brandon Agar (2-2) picked up the win for the Saints, pitching six innings and striking out five. Clint Echols (0-3) picked up the loss for the Jaguars.
The Saints will look to win the series in the rubber match against the Jaguars tomorrow at Lake Olmstead Stadium. First pitch is slated for 1:00 p.m. in Augusta.
