DAHLONEGA, Ga. - The University of North Georgia baseball team took on the University of Montevallo Falcons in a Peach Belt Conference doubleheader on Saturday at Bob Stein Stadium. Montevallo (29-15, 15-11 PBC) defeated the Saints (16-26, 6-17) in both games by identical scores of 6-1.
Game 1: Montevallo 6, North Georgia 1
Montevallo opened the scoring in the third inning when Thomas Bradey hit a solo shot to left field to take the lead 1-0. Three batters later, Will Fulmer hit an RBI single that scored two runs to stretch the lead to 3-0.
The Falcons responded in the fifth as Jackson Slaid hit a sacrifice fly to left field, allowing Fulmer to score and make the score 4-1.
Montevallo put another run on the board after loading the bases in the sixth as Bradey came across the plate and extended the lead to 5-1.
Vinny Rodriguez continued the Falcon scoring in the seventh with a solo homerun to right field.
North Georgia had an opportunity to score in the seventh as they loaded the bases with only one out, but the Falcons' defense clamped down and got the Saints to strike and ground out without a run scoring.
Gearhart led the Saints at the plate, going 3-3 in the contest with an RBI.
Clint Spratlin (2-4) was tabbed with the loss for the Saints after pitching 5.1 innings, allowing five runs and striking out five.
Game 2: Montevallo 6, North Georgia 1
North Georgia struck first in game two of the doubleheader as Eason Spivey led off with a double and came around to score on a passed ball to take the early lead 1-0.
The Falcons answered in the third as both Fulmer and Austin Dubberly came across the plate after both hit singles to lead off the inning to take the lead 2-1.
Montevallo kept scoring in the fourth as they had three Falcons cross the plate in the inning, capped off by a two RBI single by Rodriguez to stretch the Falcon lead to 5-1.
The Falcons added another run in the fifth as Slaid led off the inning with a double and scored on a double by Andrew Hill that made the score 6-1.
Brett Wright led the way at the plate for the Saints, going 2-4 in the game.
Taylor Keinat (2-7) was credited with the loss, going 7.1 innings, allowing six runs and striking out five.
The Saints and Falcons will complete the series tomorrow, April 21, at Bob Stein Stadium in Dahlonega. First pitch is slated for high noon.
