Nighthawks Have Five-Game Winning Streak Snapped In Doubleheader Split With Pfeiffer
DAHLONEGA, Georgia –(UNGAthletics.com) – The University of North Georgia baseball team split a pair of one-run affairs with visiting Pfeiffer University winning the opener 4-3 before dropping a 2-1 decision in the nightcap on Sunday afternoon at UNG's Bob Stein Stadium. The Nighthawks earned the series win taking two of three from the Falcons.
In the opener, the Nighthawks scored three runs in the bottom of the third inning to erase a 1-0 deficit after the Falcons were able to scrape one across in the first frame of the day. Tremayne Toorie's double down the leftfield line scored Joey Cecere and Cameron Crawford to cap North Georgia's scoring.
After Pfeiffer cut the deficit to 3-2 in the top of the third the teams traded runs in the fourth inning as the remainder of the game would go scoreless. Toorie would score the game-winner on an RBI double by Kevin Krupp in the bottom of the fourth.
Toorie finished the opener as the Nighthawks' only multiple-hit weapon going 2-4 from the plate with a pair of RBI's and a run scored. The Falcons outhit North Georgia 9-6 but were plagued by a pair of fielding errors.
PU's Jon Gray and Cody McKenzie combined for 5 hits in eight plate appearances from the top of the Falcons' lineup. Josh Branch took the loss for Pfeiffer.
North Georgia's Josh Wolfe earned his first win of the season with five and two thirds innings of relief work in which he struck out four. Christian Turnipseed posted his fourth save in four chances after recording a clean ninth inning after allowing a leadoff single to Gray.
The victory was the Nighthawks fifth consecutive.
In the nightcap, Pfeiffer scored a run in the top of the eighth to come out on top of a pitchers' duel. North Georgia opened the scoring in the bottom of the second inning when Joey Cecere doubled down the right field line scoring Cameron Crawford who reached base on a single before stealing second.
Pfeiffer (5-3) tied things up in the top of the third on an RBI single by McKenzie and the game would remain scoreless over the next four innings until the Falcons found the game-winner on a homerun by Gray.
UNG was able to put the tying run on base courtesy of a double by Crawford but he was stranded on third when Pfeiffer's Dylan Norris was able to put his third save of the season in the books.
Crawford led North Georgia with a 2-4 performance in the nightcap as he scored the Nighthawks' lone run.
Despite allowing just a single earned run, Blake Gaubert took the loss on the mound after striking out four and scattering eight Falcon hits.
UNG (5-4) will continue with its 15-game season-opening home stand with a three-game series with Anderson University beginning on Friday, Feb. 21 at 5:00 at the Old Sombrero.
