#700: UNG Head Baseball Coach Tom Cantrell Collects Milestone Victory
DAHLONEGA, Georgia – (UNGAthletics.com) – Head baseball coach Tom Cantrell earned his 700th career victory on Friday evening with a 6-2 win over Anderson University (S.C.) at Bob Stein Stadium. Sophomore pitcher Brandon Agar moved to 3-0 on the season on the mound with a dominant performance the yielded 10 strikeouts.
"Brandon Agar pitched well again for us tonight," said Cantrell. "He is such a competitor and continues to get better and better with each outing."
Andrew Gordon led the Nighthawk offense with a 3-4 performance from the plate that included a pair of RBI's. Tremayne Toorie was 2-4 from the leadoff position while Joey Cecere extended his on-base streak to 10 games with a 1-3 performance anchored by an RBI double in the fourth inning.
An RBI single by Anderson's Brett Cash in the top of the first put the Trojans on the board first but Agar would take over on the hill and work five straight scoreless innings before the Trojans scratched another run across with a sacrifice fly in the seventh.
A three-spot in the bottom of the third is all the Nighthawks would need as Gordon would leadoff with the first of his three singles. A double by Toorie scoring Cameron Crawford immediately followed by a two-RBI single by Travis Naraine would produce all the damage.
An inning later Gordon would single home Trevor Sams before Cecere's double plated Kevin Krupp. North Georgia's final run came a single frame later when Gordon singled scoring Ryan Raper. Raper reached on a one-out triple down the rightfield line.
Anderson (3-10) outhit the Nighthawks 9-8 led by Kyle Bailey's 3-4 performance from the leadoff position. Steven Cooper and Garrett Bernardo added multiple-hit outings for the Trojans.
"It is nice to get the 700th win, but that is a tribute to all the great players and coaches that I have had the privilege to work with," said Cantrell. "I appreciate everyone's support throughout the years, but I have had a lot of great players in my 19 years."
North Georgia (6-4) and Anderson will face off in game two of the three-game series tomorrow (Feb. 22) afternoon at 1:00. There will be a short presentation honoring Coach Cantrell at home plate prior to first pitch.
