Dahlonega, GA - The North Georgia College & State University
soccer programs open their 2008 seasons on Friday, with the women
at home against Erskine College, and the men on the road at the
Mount Olive Classic.
On the women’s side, Casey Smith returns after being named
to the All-Region team after her freshman year in 2007. Now a
sophomore, Smith had two goals and nine assists for the Saints as
she started 17 games last season, and her nine assists were second
most in the PBC.
Senior forward Lauren Cappy returns for her final season after
another solid year. Cappy played in 16 matches, starting 14 and
logging 661 minutes. She scored five goals and added two
assists for 12 points.
The men’s team returns Senior Jose Herrera who was named to
the PBC All-Tournament Team and was one of only two players to
start in all 19 of the Saints' games in 2007.
After losing a Peach Belt All-Conference performer in goal, the
Saints will look to a pair of goalkeepers to step up this
season. Sophomore Stephen Smith, who saw limited action last
season, will compete for the job with freshman and Serbia native
Rade Tanaskovic.
The Lady Saints kickoff their season at the North Georgia Soccer
Complex at 4:00 p.m., with a live stats broadcast at
SaintsSports.com, while the men will start at 7:30 p.m. in Mount
Olive, North Carolina.
